I almost didn't go for a dive today (Oct. 28, 2009), but the visibility was decent the day before at nearby Discovery Island, it was a good day for current and the wind was reasonable. All these conditions don't come together very often so I went out for a look. I wanted to see what it was like farther around the point of the island. Instead on tying up my boat in the usual bay, I went to the Northern side of the point (near the exposed rocks just offshore). Once I was past the shallow reefs, the dive was similar to the previous ones I did at Strongtide except it didn't seem as steep. My maximum depth was about 70 feet and visibility was 30 feet. I saw a few Puget Sound king crabs, an Irish lord and 2 octopus (one was dead and being fought over in a slow-motion tug-of-war by some sunflower stars). An old fishing net was snagged on part of the reef. A sign on the island warns boats not to anchor because of an undersea cable in this area. I always assumed it was a power cable, but there's none shown on the chart. Underwater, I saw several lengths of what looked like steel cable strung around at random about 30-50 feet deep.
