Last time I dove here a month or two ago, I said I wanted to have a better look at there area above 60' deep when the visibility was better. That day was definitely today (Sept. 18, 2016). Except for the areas near shore that were being stirred up by the waves, visibility was close to 100' from top to bottom. I swam out from the same small beach that I used last time. I had a quick look at the small, 30-40'-deep rocky reef out to the right from the beach:
I turned around and swam out to the left from the small beach towards the large rocky area sticking out from the point.
I followed the base of the wall. It varied from 70-110' deep. Even from 105' deep I could clearly see the surface. Compared to some other dives in the area, I didn't see much marine life here. There were a few feather stars, boot sponges and crimson, swimming and painted anemones. There weren't many fish either. There were maybe 2 or 3 small quillback rockfish, a copper rockfish, a tiger rockfish and a juvenile yelloweye rockfish.
The rocky wall ended and I swam out across a slope of sand/gravel about 70' deep. There were lots of tube-dwelling anemones and a few sea pens and crimson anemones.
I continued swimming along the gravel slope about 70' deep. I saw another rocky area in the distance. Since I had already built up enough nitrogen, I stayed at a depth of 70' and started swimming over it. I'd guess this rocky area went down to about 100' deep. It looked like there were more rockfish down there than at the wall/reef near the point. My air supply made me turn around before I could see much of this rocky area.
I swam back to the gravel slope and saw an octopus out in the open next to a sea pen.
I headed up the slope and saw an area about 20-30' deep that had several plumose anemones. These shallow rocky reefs seemed to continue over a large area, but I didn't have the air to explore too far.
I swam back to shore over the mostly-flat shallow bottom. I decided to get out of the water at a beach on the opposite side of the point to where I started. I ended up swimming on the surface for most of it. With the good visibility, I could see the bottom below me anyway (10-20' deep).
Diving areas I've never been to in such good visibility made this a great dive. I was a bit disappointed by the sparse marine life on the main wall/reef area. If I come back, I'll try and head straight for that farther reef/wall that I saw from 70' deep. I'd like to see what's out there deeper and farther along that rocky area.
