I wanted to do a quick, in-town dive so I showed up here for another try at a rock greenling photo (March 5, 2010). For the first part of the dive I swam down to the base of the rocky slope (25-30 feet deep). The mostly-flat rocky reefs and boulders had fish-eating anemones spaced out every 10 feet or so. The only fish I saw were a few small kelp greenlings, a copper rockfish and the usual tiny variety of sculpins (mostly longfin). Visibility was 10-15 feet. I figured I had about enough photos of fish-eating anemones so I swam up to the shallows to look for a rock greenling around the surfgrass. I didn't see one, but it was nice and bright and colourful up in the mini "surge channels" dotted with anemones and bits of colourful sponge. In one of the protected "pockets" in the reef there were several large pieces of iron about 3 feet long and 6-8" in diameter. My imagination tried to convince me that they were ballast from an old wreck, but logic told me that they were probably junk shoved off the land during construction of the houses on shore.
