This is one of the more famous/popular shore dives on Maui. This was the first dive I did on the Island (Nov. 20, 2018). I parked on Makena Rd. and walked down a short public access path to the water. The path runs next to a small cemetery that this site is named after. One side of the path was a wall of plywood from what I'm assuming is a new house being built.
I swam out along the rocky finger that sticks out from shore. Visibility was around 80' (I'm guessing). There was a fair amount of surge that made me feel like I was swimming against a current most of the time. Most of this area was around 20' deep. I could hear humpback whales singing in the distance for the entire dive. At first it sounded like people crying and it was kind of spooky. Then I realized what it was and after that it sounded like stereotypical new age music whales singing.
This site is also known as "5 Caves" since there are several caverns in the area. I found 2 that were large enough to swim into. One of them had some white-tip reef sharks and a sleeping turtle in it. The sharks were shy and they swam away deeper into the cavern away from me so I didn't get any photos.
The tip of the rocky finger was about 30' deep. A snorkel/dive charter boat mooring was attached to it. Out past the tip of the point, there seemed to be mostly sand.
I saw quite a few small, colourful fish swimming everywhere, but they aren't visible in most of the pictures. Whenever I swam close enough to take a photo, they would all dart away in terror and hide in the coral.
