I wasn't intending to dive here today (Dec. 5, 2021), but the site I was hoping to dive was inaccessible due to a landslide so I settled on this spot since it was closest. I've never been impressed by the lack of marine life here, but I thought I'd try again to find the deeper rocky areas shown on a sidescan image. Last time I had no luck.
I swam down over the shallower rocky reefs I've been to before. Visibility was pretty bad, only 8-10'.
From the base of these reefs I swam out North down the sandy slope looking for the deeper reefs. When I reached 95' deep, I turned left (West) and kept swimming at that depth. I didn't see any rocky areas and the current was pretty strong so I gave up and swam back up the slope. In hindsight, I think I gave up too soon and just missed the deeper reefs.
I spent the rest of the dive back on the shallower rocky reefs, 30-60' deep.
Unless I'm forced to dive here again due to another local landslide, I don't plan on coming back to this site. Despite the current, there's a strange lack of marine life. Since fresh water is toxic to marine life, maybe the low salinity from the nearby Cowichan River outflow prevents many species from colonizing the area.
