This is a popular scuba diving site just North of Kailua-Kona. We snorkeled here a few times last time we visited the Big Island and this trip, we snorkeled here a couple more times. Most of this beach is hard lava with waves crashing into it so the only safe place to enter the water is from a small cove just past the end of the runway. We snorkeled out to the right where the lava on shore drops down in a small wall to about 10-20' deep. There are a few small arches in the lava if you swim far enough and the visibility is usually good, except sometimes near the shore where the water is full of tiny white bubbles from the waves crashing against the rocks. Even in the sheltered cove, entry can be a little tricky unless it's calm, but it's close to town, there's lots of parking and the little beach is a nice, uncrowded place to lay around for a bit.
