Last weekend I did a dive at the "Secret Spot" and found that all the cloud sponges there were dead or broken off. Today (July 16, 2023) I want to re-visit Christmas Point to see if the same thing has happened to the sponges there. Visibility in the shallows was about 6', and by the time I reached the bottom of the mooring line, it was improving to about 20-30'.
As I swam down deeper, the visibility improved to over 50'.
I reached the cloud sponge-covered balcony that sticks out from the wall. I was at about 65' deep and I could see the entire balcony that was about 115' deep. I'm not sure what this visual distance was since I was also looking down at an angle, but it means that the visibility was great.
I couldn't spend much time down here because of a previous deep dive, but I could see that the sponges here seemed ok. There were lots of dead and dying ones, but I remember that there always have been remains of dead ones in between the healthy ones here.
After my too-brief visit with the sponges, I swam back up towards the mooring line.
